The Deak family, known for introducing the first electronic cigarettes to the American market place are at it once again, they are utilizing their vast knowledge and expertise in the vaping industry to launch a new brand line of vape juice and CBD e-liquids they call Hot Juice.  Jon, Robert and there Sister Lula are responsible for the launch of the well-known e-cigarette brand SAFE CIG back in 2006 which quickly grew to be a multi-million dollar company servicing the needs of e cig smokers around the world through their ecommerce site.

After about a year of hard marketing consisting of door-to-door sales and social media awareness the Deaks opened up their first brick and mortar location in their hometown of Philidelphia, PA, needless to say it was an instant hit and the recognition of their brand exploded.

It wasn’t too long before vape shops began to spring up around the country many of which were buying their products from directly SAFE Cig via their wholesale program, demand for Safe CIG vape supplies exploded exponentially and the Deaks found themselves scrambling to keep up to demand.

After several years in operation it became apparent to the Deaks that with the evolution of the vape industry there was a new demand and that demand was for quality Vape juices and eliquids that would enhance the vaping experience, and that’s when Hot Juice was born.

In 2016, the Deak family sold their shares in the SAFE CIG company and set out on a journey to develop a line of standard vape juice and CBD juices that would set the standard for excellence in the industry, in doing so they understood the importance of using only the highest quality ingredients sourced locally and manufactured in FDA approved facilities.

In September 2018 Hot Juice was launched and has quickly gained recognition among vaping aficionados as being The Future of Vape Juice & CBD e-Liquids, online reviews  such as this Hot Juice Review from renowned vaper Jaxson Kane touts their juices as being “World Class” — and claims that since vaping Hot Juice “he won’t vape anything else”

I think we can safely say that given their extensive knowledge and years of experience in the vaping industry the Deak family is likely to hit this new product launch out of the park and it will not surprise us that one day soon Hot Juice will be a force to reckon with.

Studies underway to explore the possibility of e-cigs being used a as smoking cessation devise December 12, 2016 17:32

Although it is a common fact that the habit of smoking is risky, it continues to be the cause of 37,000 deaths in Canada every year. Also, only 10%-20% of active smokers can stop the smoking habit with the use of present cessation therapies like gum, counseling and nicotine patches. The need for new cessation techniques led to the multiple clinical study on the safety and efficacy of electronic cigarettes.  The study is coordinated by Dr. Mark Eisenberg at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH).

Dr. Eisenberg who is a cardiologist and epidemiologist at the Lady Davis Institute at the JGH, stressed that smoking is the highest cause of mortality which can be otherwise prevented. He further described the goal of the study as to determine the efficacy of e-cigarettes as a e media of smoking withdrawal or total quitting the habit of smoking

The study will recruit subjects who are above the age of 18 years and had smoked a minimum of 10 cigarettes in a day for over a year and have been motivated to quit. The study envisages 486 participants in total. The subjects will be randomly allocated into three therapy groups which includes:

  • nicotine filled electronic cigarettes with individual counselling;
  • non-nicotine electronic cigarettes with individual counselling; and
  • individual counselling alone.

The treatment period is set at three months and additional follow-up that will span for a year. This is to be able to ascertain if the subject is able to maintain abstinence and also study other side effects withdrawal syndromes associated with the therapies.

Dr Eisengerg acknowledged the fact that multiple study that cut across different population is required to effectively evaluate the efficacy of e-cigarettes. But he considered this study as a significant step in the right direction.

Presently, the production and use of e-cigarettes are not regulated by Health Canada or the US Food Drug and Administration. The outcome of this study will avail the regulators and other  stakeholders pertinent information about the efficacy and safety of e-cigarettes in breaking the smoking habit.

When we gave the study a closer look, we  found some fundamental flaws in this type of research.

On the first note, we think it is wrong to simply assume that the e-cigs are specifically a type of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Although they can be used as such, one should note that the primary purpose of the product is to be an alternative product containing nicotine which is in direct competition with conventional tobacco smoking, The success of e-gigs with the consumers is that the product is a more enjoyable and viable alternative to tobacco smoking.

The randomized control trials call for strict regimes for the different groups. This includes selection of devices, the flavor and strength of nicotine. This requirement on its own does annul the primary factors for successfully switching to e-cigs.

It is rife for those without personal experience to erroneously assume that the different brands of e-cigs will only have marginal difference as the case is with conventional smoking. Well, the difference is not marginal and can be compared with conventional motor vehicles. -there cannot be a hard-fast rule for all.  A study of a sports car will give a result that is not applicable to trucks, SUVs or buses.

In view of these, it should not be a surprise if the results go the same way as other past research data which are available to smokers but never utilized.

Health Canada Proposes New Regulations on Electronic Cigarettes December 3, 2016 11:22

The Government of Canada recently introduced a new piece of legislation to take some control over the ever-expanding vaping industry. One part of the legislation was making it illegal to promote or sell e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 18.

The changes were designed to discourage teenagers from vaping without preventing adults who wanted to use vaping as a stop-smoking measure being able to access them.

E-cigarettes, which are battery-powered vaporisers, are currently in a legal grey area. E-cigarettes that contain nicotine aren’t technically approved to be sold in Canada even though there are many shops throughout Canada that are selling them.

The Health Minister of Canada Jane Philpott has said that there is evidence that using vaping products helps current smokers avoid the damages of smoking and quit smoking.

There is also evidence, however, to suggest that they can be a gateway “drug” for younger people that convinces them to start smoking by giving them a nicotine addiction.

The changes that were unveiled on Tuesday will provide two pathways to formal approval by Ottawa. There is one for e-cigarettes designed to be used as a stop-smoking aid, with a separate path for vaping devices that don’t claim to help people stop smoking.

The federal legislation is aimed at federal responsibility. This includes how e-cigarettes are advertised, promoted, packaged and used in public places and federally regulated workplaces.

The proposals also aim to stop e-cigarette producers from making them available in flavours that are appealing to children, empower Health Canada to mandate that e-cigarettes come with health warnings, and keep workers in industries regulated by the government safe from second-hand vapour, which is how the government handles the dangers of second hand smoke.

Provincial governments and the vaping industry itself have been calling for Ottawa to come up with national guidelines for these e-cigarettes as they have become more popular. The latest data from the Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs survey shows that 13% of Canadians aged over 15 have given e-cigarettes a try, which is up from the 9% recorded in the 2013 survey.

For now though almost every providence has created their own e-cigarette legislations with the exception of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The result is that different states have different rules, but every state with legislation has banned the sale of e-cigarettes to under-18s.

For now there’s not been a lot of research into e-cigarettes. Even the results of the studies that have been done on the effects of e-cigarettes can be conflicting. Health Canada does acknowledge that the devices can benefit public health if they do in fact help people quit smoking, but they also warn that they could become dangerous if they are used as a gateway to proper cigarettes by teens who might not have started smoking otherwise.

One of the main parts of the legislation regulates e-cigarette health claims; such as the claim that vaping can help you quit smoking.

Another proposed idea is to give vaping products child-resistant packaging to protect children against potential nicotine poisoning.

The legislation also contains proposals to give all tobacco products plain packaging, which is similar to the law in countries such as Australia. Branding tobacco packages with logos and graphics would be a prohibited practice if the legislation passes.

The department announced in May that there would be three months of public consultation.

Canadians are Advised on the Effects of Smoking Electronic Cigarettes October 22, 2015 10:21

A CanCigs Electronic Cigarette
Generally, e-cigarettes, unlike regular cigarettes, contain lesser chemicals (regular cigarettes contain 5000 to 7000 chemicals and about 70 carcinogens). This is because while regular cigarettes produce most of these chemicals via combustion, e-cigarettes never reach a point of combustion. Instead, liquid is heated to a point of vaporization. In essence, this is one of the reasons why many people perceive them to be better and safer. However, it's still not clear what exact effects, (negative or positive), e-cigarettes present to the consumer or, what chemical levels one is exposed to upon consumption.

According to the School of Public Health and Health Systems Waterloo University associate professor David Hammond, their effects 'depend on how they are being used.' The professor has gone further to launch a study whose aim is to figure out the benefits presented by e-cigarettes - if any. This study set to recruit smokers, introduce them to e-cigarettes and after a while (six months later), check back on them to see the results. As such, this study will be evaluating changes in the subject's smoking habits as well as changes in their chemical levels (within the body).

The study, which is going to be done in Canada, will take in approximately 200 subjects/smokers. Since its being funded by the Ministry of Health, all findings will be published and later on shared directly with the Canadian government. That way, the government will become knowledgeable of its effects hence, be able to enforce new regulations without bias. (At the moment, consumption of e-cigarettes is drawing lots of debate from the government (both at provincial and federal levels). This is despite the fact that they still don't have much to go on with; no one has any idea to what extent they can be deemed as being beneficial).

Although some people claim that e-cigarettes can be adopted when one wants to quit/replace traditional smoking, or simply use them in situations where smoking is prohibited, it's hard to tell the exact reason why people use them. Conversely, e-cigarettes are much closely linked to smoking than using nicotine patches or chewing nicotine gums. It's hence possible that, other than helping smokers quit smoking, it will introduce a new generation of vapor-users into the market. (At the moment, one in every 10 15+ years old Canadian has tried using them. And, the bigger percentage of these users is made up of young people who have never smoked before).

Smokers who may be interested in taking part in this study are asked to send an email to smokingstudy@uwaterloo.ca.

Calgary Proposes New Anti-Smoking Bylaw That Will Treat E-Cigs the Same as Cigarettes June 9, 2015 11:41

Calgary Vape Shop Owner

Calgary, Alberta law makers are proposing a by-law that will lump electronic cigarettes and traditional cigarettes together effectively treating them as the same.

Changes could take place as early as July/2015 and would put Calgary on the map as having some of the toughest laws governing the use of e-cigs in Canada even though vaping is fast proving to be a much safer alternative with far lesser health risks.

With the sale of electronic smoking devises predicted to soon out-sell that of traditional tobacco cigarettes, many governments across Canada and North America are rethinking their anti-smoking laws and proposing changes to include e-cigarettes.

In a recent poll amongst citizens of Calgary it was concluded that over 50% of Calgarians are not comfortable being in close proximity to someone who is smoking an electronic cigarette or related devise, citing that the vapor was a nuisance that greatly affected the enjoyment of their surroundings particularly in closed confines.

Vape shop owners are concerned that restricting the use of ecigs in public places would affect their livelihood as it would make it illegal to for them to demonstrate their products to the buying public.

If this new by-law goes into affect it would be the second major anti-smoking law to come into effect in recent weeks following on the heels of a newly proposed ruling that will ban the sale of menthol cigarettes across the province sometime in the Fall of 2015.

The new bylaw will make is illegal to use an electronic smoking devise in or around all public places where traditional cigarettes are prohibited - without exception!

An infraction would come with a fine of a minimum $100 to anybody caught using an electronic cigarette or related product and heavier fines being brought upon establishment owners who willingly allow the use of ecigs in or on their premises.

Quebec's National Assembly Looks at Regulating E-cigarettes with the Introduction of Bill 44 May 11, 2015 13:32

The Government of Quebec has proposed a new bill that will effectively regulate the use electronic cigarettes and vaporizers the same as way as conventional tobacco products.

If this new Bill 44 is passed it will mean that vapors will no longer be able to use E-cigarettes and related products in public places where Tobacco cigarettes are banned.

Quebec's junior minister of public health Lucie Charlebois stated that what ever current laws apply the the use of real cigarettes will apply to E-cigs as well, for example you will not be able to smoke e-cigarettes in restaurants and you will have to be at least 9 metres from the door.

Businesses where electronic cigarettes are forbidden to be used will face fines of up to $100,000 if they continue to allow them to be used on their premises

Consumers will have to be of legal age to purchase any electronic smoking products and retailers and merchants will be faced with heavy fines if caught selling to minors.

The Bill will further the current tobacco bans to include a smack-down on second hand smoke and a complete ban on smoking inside a motor vehicle where a minor is present. The ban will also be extended to outdoor patios of the hospitality industry such as bars, restaurants, hotels etc.

And finally, the ban will do away with the sale of flavoured tobacco which the government feels is a lure towards getting younger people to take up smoking.

Steps Towards Quitting Smoking April 23, 2015 10:15

Steps Towards Quitting Smoking
quit smoking - image

Quitting any given habit is considered by many people as one of the toughest things one can do. In fact, in explaining how hard it is, behavioral experts state that, during the first phase, one is only able to get rid of the 'H' in HABIT hence, leaving one with A BIT. Then, after successfully getting rid of the 'A', one is once again left with 'BIT'. Getting rid of 'B' still leaves one with an 'IT'. Hence, it's after getting rid of the 'IT' than one can successfully claim to have completely quit an unwanted behavior.

As such, quitting is not just a process but, a very challenging and tough one. For one to emerge successful, they have to not only come up with a concrete and executable plan but, get support and strictly adhere to the required steps.

THE STEPS

If you are seriously considering quitting smoking, then you'll find these steps to very helpful:

  • 1) START BY THINKING THINGS THROUGH:
The first thing that you ought to think about is why you smoke. During this step, you should make a list of the things that usually trigger you to smoke. Then, come up with another list of things or behaviors that you can engage in so as to distract yourself or break the habit.

Secondly, list all the reasons that are prompting you to want to quit. Examples of things to include are risks connected to smoking and, how you are bound to benefit by not smoking.

Lastly, finds ways that will enable you execute your plan. In here, you should address the things that are likely to work for you and ones that won’t.

  • 2) GET READY FOR THE CHALLENGES:

In life, nothing comes easy. Thus, when quitting, you should be more than ready for challenges. Some of the challenges you'll face and should be able to deal with include withdrawals, temptations and cravings.

In addition, you should seek support from professionals such as counselors as well as co-workers, family members and friends. This is because these people will give you the support that you need especially when struggling to cope with the above challenges.

  • 3) MAKE PLANS FOR YOUR SUCCESS:

To be able to successfully execute your plan, you should set a date and time of when you intend to quit, share this plan with your close friends and family, make a list of your goals and objectives and, come up with a way through which you intend to be rewarding yourself for good behavior. To make the plan realistic, don't set the date on a day that you'll be stressed.

It's also very important that you remain optimistic. The best way of doing this is to start picturing yourself as a non-smoker and start thinking of how good life is going to be. You may as well seek inspiration from your past conquests and successes.

Then, read through your reasons for wanting to quit and the goals you desire to achieve. Also, start practicing by cutting down on the number of cigarettes you smoke in a day. Finally, prepare in advance - start thinking like a non-smoker and, keep reminding yourself of the withdrawal symptoms you're bound to encounter and how you'll handle them.

  • 4) QUIT:

When the quit day finally arrives, avoid situations that may tempt you to not follow through your plan. A good way of doing this would be by getting rid of all cigarette related stuff like the cigarettes, lighters and ashtrays. It's also very important that you avoid situations and routines that may stress you and, do as much as possible to get distracted from your past habit.

The last step is to keep calm and cherish all of your successes - no matter how minimal. And, in case of a slip, don't give up. Instead, stay focused and recommence your quit plan as soon as possible.

HOW TO DEAL WITH SLIPS:

A slip is basically the act of smoking one or two cigarettes while on your quit plan. Since smoking can be automatic, slips may happen unconsciously. Whenever this happens;

  • a) Don't hate yourself, feel guilty or panic for, one or two slips have almost zero impact on your overall plan. After all, you can always give your plan another shot. Thus, if you don't succeed during the first or second time, try again.
  • b) Analyze the factor that may have caused you to slip. Then, come up with a solution regarding how to cope with that particular factor come the next time.
  • c) Immediately go back to your quitting. Also, work towards preventing future relapsing.

Never forget that there have been others like you who despite the challenges and struggles, have successfully put a stop to their smoking. In fact, roughly 2/3 of Canadians who have ever smoked have already quit smoking.

In a nutshell, the ultimate key to quitting is remaining true to yourself, being aggressive and optimistic and, keeping on pushing on.

The Future of e-Cigarettes in Canada March 13, 2015 16:00

CanCigs Canadian Electronic Retailer

As of today, the e-cigarette industry is considered among the most profitable industries in North America including Canada. This is brought forth by the fact that, only four years ago (in 2010), they were nothing but obscure products that only made a total of $80 in retail sales in United States. Four years down the line, their sales had increased by over 2000% which is equivalent to $1.7 billion in retail sales. Although there is no data showing the growth of the e-cigarettes industry in Canada, a recent study - which was done in early 2015 shows that 20% of Canadian youth and 15% of the total Canadian population is either actively using or has tried using e-cigarettes. In addition to this, e-cigarettes have overtaken the prominence once held by the traditional tobacco cigarettes as the latter now stands at 16%.

There being no existing laws that address issues like who should be allowed to consume or sell e-cigarettes and where they should be consumed / sold, the government, which is being backed by prominent education and health figures is hastily trying to come up with a new legislation that will help regulate their consumption. Basically, this is because at the moment, anyone, even minors, is free to purchase and use e-cigarettes in both private and public areas. But then, according to the January 1, 2016 Ontario's Making Healthier Choices Act, e-cigarettes in Canada will start facing restrictions similar to those imposed on tobacco cigarettes. This is amid objections by supports and owners of the e-cigarettes industry.

Moreover, a lot of questions have been raised concerning the safety of e-cigarettes. There being no supporting data, most of these questions are in regards to the likely long-term effects that may come by after one has breathed in too much e-cigarette vapor. So although propylene and glycerin have been approved for oral consumption, no one knows what effects they may expose the lungs to more so after long and repetitive inhalation. Medical scientists worry that; the effects of e-cigarettes on the lungs may be the same as those of other substances that despite being safe for GI (gastrointestinal) tract are exceedingly dangerous for the lungs. Another concern is that the whole vaporization process adopted by e-cigarettes may produce chemicals, like formaldehyde which can be harmful to the body. Lastly, public health experts worry that making it okay for people to use e-cigarettes especially in public spaces may create a normality feeling that smoking in acceptable. As a result, their decades-long efforts of decreasing the rates of smoking especially among the youth may die out in an instant.

Despite all these worries, owners and supporters of e-cigarettes emphasize that there is nothing to worry about for according to a study done in 2014 by Harvard School of Public Health, only 1% of non-smokers have tried vaping. It’s hence clear that the bigger percentage (99%) of vapers is made up of current and/or previous tobacco smokers. This being the case, there's no way e-cigarettes can be as dangerous as tobacco cigarettes that these individuals were used to. More importantly is that a majority of these individuals use e-cigarettes to help them reduce their overall consumption of tobacco cigarettes. And, going by a quote by one of Canada's largest e-cigarette retailers, 'there's no way e-cigarettes can be as harmful as tobacco cigarettes for it is the tobacco cigarettes' mode of nicotine delivery that's responsible for the lung-related disease.'

An In-depth Look at Health Authorities' Proposed e-Cigarette Ban February 18, 2015 10:35

As e-cigarettes continue to gain popularity among masses, health authorities are doing all they can to have them banned. Just like every other product that they have fought so hard to ban, there is absolutely no logic explanation behind this proposal. All they have is a mediocre report by Health Canada which states that approximately 20% of teenagers have tried vaping and that; e-cigarettes are yet to be approved.

Even though it's true that e-cigarettes are not approved, we can't ignore the fact that they have proven to be a whole lot more beneficial than all the other smoking cessation devices, like nicotine gum, or any other approved products with warning labels on them. What this means is that being 'approved' doesn't necessarily mean that the product will work. Thus, we can all agree that e-cigarettes are rapidly proving themselves to be the ultimate smoking cessation option. How is this so? A greater majority of people who are vaping are ones who either want to cut down on their cigarette consumption or, ones who want to quit. As such, e-cigarettes can be perceived as the ultimate breakthrough to smoking cessation. This is indeed seconded by Quebec's minister of health who also happens to be a medical doctor; Gatan Barrette. Dr. Barrette, who specialized in radiology, was quoted during a CBC interview affirming that e-cigarettes work. This belief is not only held by him but also by his colleagues.

What's more conflicting about this proposed ban is that, health authorities have for years been making billions of dollars out of tobacco taxes. Interestingly, authorities just keep on implementing barbaric measures but, don't care about the limits they are pushing people to. Wouldn't it be a lot better to first offer an alternative solution before banning the only existing solution there is? And if the ban is implemented, how else will smokers be able to quit or cut down on their smoking? Judging from Canadian authorities track records, it's evident that all they do is ban as many things as they can. Clearly, were they let to have their way; everything under the sun would end up getting stamped out.

To ensure that every citizen's needs are taken into account, it's best that the government set a limit on the number of things that have to be banned within a given timeframe. Alternatively, it would make more sense were the authorities to lift an equivalent existing ban before imposing another. For instance, if e-cigarettes get banned, then, people should be allowed to smoke in bars, or be allowed to buy beer in grocery stores. By so doing, Canadians will at least continue holding part of their freedom hence enabling them to continue exercising their personal freedoms.

In this regard, it's appropriate that individuals, more so ones in authority and those who are vehemently campaigning for this ban get enlightened on the benefits of e-cigarettes first, before opening their mouths. And isn't it time that people came up with more legitimate reasons to enable them get backing for their ideas rather than dragging children in all of their proposals?
